The Power of Serge

By Jay Cipoletti

In Game 4 last night, the Spurs got more shots than Oklahoma City from the high value Restricted Area and Corner 3 zones, while being outshot nearly 2:1 in the Mid-Range dead zone. As the narrative typically goes, it was another Spurs offensive masterpiece and a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference Finals.

Except it was anything but. While the Spurs struggled to convert at the rim, making only 50% of their 26 Restricted Area attempts, the Thunder were making nearly everything inside the circle, missing only five of their 21 Restricted Area shots. The discrepancy extended further into the paint as well, with the Spurs making only 5-of-14 (35.7%) against the Thunder's 60% make rate (6-of-10).

Contrast those numbers with the first two games of the series, where the Spurs shot a combined 60-of-90 (66.7%) on all shots in the lane in Ibaka's absence.
