SportVU Series Preview: Pacers vs. Wizards

The Pacers and Wizards tip off their Eastern Conference Semifinal series on Monday in Indianapolis (7:00 ET, TNT) in a matchup of the No. 1 and No. 5 seeds in the East. The Pacers won the season series 2-1, but needed seven games to get past No. 8 seed Atlanta in the first round, while the Wizards dispatched of No. 4 seed Chicago in just five games.

Using SportVU data from their three regular season games, we examine the top matchups in this series. Who got the best of the point guard matchup between George Hill and John Wall? What about the small forward matchup between Paul George and Trevor Ariza? Will Roy Hibbert be able to bounce back from a rough first round matchup against the Hawks when he faces more traditional bigs from Washington? Roy Hibbert: Primary Matchup

Roy Hibbert struggled down the stretch and in the first playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks. The Wizards present a more conventional matchup for Hibbert, where he will most likely be defended by Marcin Gortat. However, Gortat did have success when defending Hibbert in the regular season.

Trevor Ariza: Primary Matchup

The Wizards look for Ariza to spark their offense with timely 3-point shots. During the regular season versus the Pacers, Paul George spent 22:37 guarding Ariza, limiting his output. George held Ariza to 6-of-16 from the floor and 2-of-7 from three. Limiting Ariza's efficiency might play a large role in this series.

While George did a great job containing Ariza, he really struggled against other 3-point shooters by allowing 5-5 when defending someone other than Ariza.

Paul George: Primary Matchup

On the other side of the court, Ariza held Paul George to 8-of-26 shooting in more than 27 minutes of matchup time. The Pacers are going to need George to score in order to keep up with the Wizards firepower.

In the Jan. 10 game, George drove the ball nine times when matched up versus Ariza.
