SportVU Matchup Data: Closing Out the First Round

The amazing First Round of the NBA Playoffs came to a close on Sunday with two more Game 7s. Using SportVU matchup data, we take a look at how the Nets edged the Raptors and the Spurs put away the Mavericks to advance to the Conference Semifinals.

Brooklyn vs. Toronto

Deron Williams defended Kyle Lowry for 8:17 in the half-court in Game 7, limiting him to 1-of-5 shooting but allowed nine drives.

Toronto struggled to contain Joe Johnson all series and Game 7 was no different as they had three different players with more than two minutes of matchup time.

Greivis Vasquez was able to find some success when defending Johnson, limiting him to 1-of-6 from the floor.

Amir Johnson found success when Paul Pierce was the primary defender at the time of shot, going 5-for-5 from the floor and scoring 10 points.


Dallas vs. San Antonio

Devin Harris spent the most time defending Parker in Game 7, but Parker took advantage of his time when he was matched up with Jose Calderon. In just more than three minutes in the half-court he was defended by Calderon, Parker was able to generate five drives and eight points from these drives.

Nowitzki struggled against Boris Diaw in the five minutes he was defended by him. On 14 touches Dirk went 2-for-9 from the floor and scored five points. When Nowitzki was defended by either Splitter or Duncan he combined for 5-of-9 shooting and 10 points.

Vince Carter had a fantastic series but in Game 7 both Danny Green and Kawhi Leonard held him to 1-of-4 shooting when they were the primary defender.
