SportVU Archive: 2014 NBA Playoffs

Throughout the 2014 NBA Playoffs, we will use SportVU player tracking technology to take a closer look at the key defensive matchups in each series. The SportVU data allows us to look at specific player vs. player matchup stats in a variety of categories such as points scored, shooting percentages, drives, rebounds, the amount of time each defender spent guarding a player and much more.

June 16, 2014: NBA Finals, Game 5
The 2013-14 NBA season came to an end on Sunday night as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Miami Heat in Game 5 to win The Finals four games to one. Throughout the Playoffs we've examined defensive matchup statistics from SportVU and do so one last time with the top matchups from San Antonio's title-clinching win.

June 13, 2014: NBA Finals, Game 4
The Spurs took a commanding 3-1 series lead following their 21-point victory in Game 4 on Thursday night in Miami. Using SportVU data, we break down the top matchups from San Antonio's win, including Kawhi Leonard vs. LeBron James, the Spurs point guards vs. Mario Chalmers, Boris Diaw vs. Dwyane Wade and more.

June 11, 2014: NBA Finals, Game 3
A historic first half helped the Spurs gain a 2-1 lead in The Finals on Tuesday night. Using SportVU data, we break down the top matchups from San Antonio's win, including Kawhi Leonard vs. LeBron James on both ends of the court, another efficient night for Tim Duncan vs. Bosh and Andersen, and Dwyane Wade's offense vs. Green and Ginobili.

June 9, 2014: NBA Finals, Game 2
The Heat answered back with a Game 2 win on Sunday night to even The Finals at 1-1. We take a closer look at the matchups from last night's game, including the Spurs' inability to slow LeBron James with either Kawhi Leonard or Boris Diaw, Chris Andersen spending more time defending Tim Duncan and Danny Green checking Dwyane Wade.

June 6, 2014: NBA Finals, Game 1
The Spurs took Game 1 of the 2014 Finals on Thursday night. We take a closer look at the matchups from last night's game, including Tim Duncan's dominant night against Chris Bosh, LeBron's efficient offense before leg cramps force him out of the game, and Danny Green's defense on Miami's shooting guards Dwyane Wade and Ray Allen.

Spurs vs. Heat
After their epic seven-game clash in last year's Finals, the Heat and Spurs will meet again with the Larry O'Brien trophy on the line, beginning with Game 1 on Thursday at 9 PM ET on ABC. Using SportVU, we take a look at some of the key matchups for this series.

June 1, 2014: West Finals, Game 6
The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 112-107 in overtime on Saturday to win the Western Conference Finals and advance to their second straight NBA Finals against the Miami Heat. With SportVU data, we look at the matchups from most competitive game of this series, including Kawhi Leonard vs. Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant defending the 3-point line and Tim Duncan against the defense of Serge Ibaka and the rest of the Thunder.

May 31, 2014: East Finals, Game 6
The Miami Heat knocked off the Indiana Pacers in six games to advance to their fourth straight NBA Finals. Using SportVU data, we take a closer look at the matchup from Miami's blowout win in Game 6, including LeBron James vs. Lance Stephenson, Rashard Lewis vs. David West and Chris Bosh vs. Roy Hibbert.

May 30, 2014: West Finals, Game 5
The Spurs moved one win away from a return trip to the NBA Finals after blowing out the Thunder 117-89 in Thursday's Game 5 in San Antonio. Using SportVU data, we take a closer look at the key matchups from Game 5, including Kawhi Leonard guarding Russell Westbrook, the Thunder trying multiple guys to try to slow down Tim Duncan, Serge Ibaka impacting Tony Parker's dribble penetration and more.

May 29, 2014: East Finals, Game 5
The Indiana Pacers staved off elimination on Wednesday with a Game 5 win in the Eastern Conference Finals. Using SportVU data, we'll take a closer look at Paul George's impressive 37-point performance, Rashard Lewis going for 18 points after being scoreless in the series, LeBron James scoring a career playoff low seven points in limited minutes and Roy Hibbert limiting the productivity of Chris Bosh.

May 28, 2014: West Finals, Game 4
Behind a 40-point, 10-assist, 5-steal effort from Russell Westbrook, the Oklahoma City Thunder evened the Western Conference Finals at 2-2 with their 105-92 win in Game 4 on Tuesday night. Using SportVU data, we take a closer look at Westbrook's incredible performance, the productivity of the Spurs bench and the matchup between Kawhi Leonard and Kevin Durant.

May 27, 2014: East Finals, Game 4
The Miami Heat took a commanding 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals after winning Game 4 on Monday night in Miami. The Heat never trailed thanks in large part to the performances of Chris Bosh and LeBron James. Using SportVU data, we take a closer look at Bosh's breakout game, LeBron consistently driving to the basket and David West winning his matchup against Rashard Lewis, albeit in a loss.

May 26, 2014: West Finals, Game 3
The Oklahoma City Thunder had their home crowd behind them and Serge Ibaka with them as they picked up their first win of the Western Conference Finals. Using SportVU data, we look at some of the key matchups from Game 3, including Ibaka's impact on both sides of the floor, the matchup between Kawhi Leonard and Kevin Durant, Tony Parker's missing shot, and Danny Green showing he can score on the drive as well as behind the arc.

May 25, 2014: East Finals, Game 3
After trailing by 15 points early, the Miami Heat rallied to defeat the Indiana Pacers 99-87 on Saturday to take a 2-1 series lead. Using SportVU data, we look at some of the key matchups from Game 3 and throughout the series as a whole, including LeBron James' efficient offense when guarded by either Paul George or Lance Stephenson, the Heat shifting LeBron to defend Stephenson more in Game 3 and Hibbert's defensive effort against Miami's bigs.

May 22, 2014: West Finals, Game 2
The San Antonio Spurs rolled to a 35-point win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday and the SportVU data highlights some of that domination. Take a closer look at Tony Parker's scoring on drives, Russell Westbrook's poor shooting night and Thabo Sefolosha's second straight scoreless game.

May 21, 2014: East Finals, Game 2
The Miami Heat defeated the Indiana Pacers 87-83 on Tuesday to even the series at 1-1 as the series shifts to Miami for Saturday's Game 3. We take a look at the SportVU data to examine the defensive matchups from Game 2, including Miami's adjustment with LeBron James' defensive assignments.

May 20, 2014: West Finals, Game 1
The San Antonio Spurs opened the Western Conference Finals with a 122-105 home win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday. Take a look at the SportVU data to see which matchups they were able to exploit against the Thunder.

May 19, 2014: East Finals, Game 1

Pacers vs. Heat
In a matchup anticipated for much of the season, the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers will meet in the Eastern Conference Finals for the second straight year. Game 1 tips off Sunday at 3:30 PM ET on ABC in Indianapolis. Using SportVU data, we break down the top matchups to watch in this series.

Spurs vs. Thunder
The last two teams to represent the West in the NBA Finals -- the Thunder in 2012 and the Spurs in 2013 -- square off in the Western Conference Finals with a return trip to the Finals on the line. May 16, 2014: Closing Time
The Thunder and Pacers picked up Game 6 wins on the road on Thursday to close out their respective series with the Clippers and Wizards. Using SportVU, we look at the matchups from Game 6 and throughout the series that were key to success for OKC and Indiana.

May 15, 2014: Shutting the Door
The Spurs and Heat each entered Wednesday's Game 5 with a chance to close out their series and advance to the Conference Finals. And this exactly what they did, knocking off the Blazers and Nets, respectively, in five games. Using SportVU data, we look at the matchups they won in their series-clinching victories.

May 14, 2014: Hammer Time
After scoring just six points in Games 3 and 4 combined, Marcin Gortat was unstoppable in Game 5, scoring 31 points on 13-of-15 shooting. Using SportVU, we take a look at how Gortat got his buckets against the trio of David West, Roy Hibbert, and Ian Mahinmi. In Oklahoma City, Matt Barnes helped keep Kevin Durant in check, but Russell Westbrook definitively won his matchup with Chris Paul.

May 13, 2014: No Stopping LeBron
The Miami Heat took a 3-1 series lead on Monday thanks to an outstanding performance from LeBron James. SportVU data shows that nine different Nets defended James in Game 4, but there was no slowing him down. The Portland Trail Blazers staved off elimination on Monday as Damian Lillard and LaMarcus Aldridge found success against the Spurs.

May 12, 2014: Comeback Kids
The Clippers and Pacers both overcame huge deficits to pick up crucial Game 4 wins on Sunday. Using SportVU data, we'll look at some of the top matchups from those games, including the Clippers going with a small lineup during their fourth-quarter rally and Paul George going off for 28 points in the second half against the Wizards.

May 11, 2014: Saturday Split
On Saturday, the Spurs extended to a 3-0 series lead over the Blazers, while the Nets were able to get a win on the board against the defending champs, pulling to a 2-1 deficit in their series. Using SportVU data, we'll take a look at the matchups that were helped lead to the Spurs and Nets to victory, including Tony Parker's continued brilliance and the Nets' outstanding shooting from beyond the arc.

May 10, 2014: Grabbing the Lead
The Thunder and Pacers picked up Game 3 road wins on Friday to take 2-1 leads in their respective series. Using SportVU data, we'll look at the key matchups in each game, including Russell Westbrook vs. Chris Paul, Reggie Jackson's defense off the Thunder bench, Roy Hibbert's second straight impressive outing vs. Marcin Gortat and Nene, and more.

May 9, 2014: Defending Home Court

May 8, 2014: Bouncing Back
After dropping Game 1 at home, both the Pacers and the Clippers bounced back to win Game 2 to even their respective series. Using SportVU data, we'll take a look at the key matchups that went their way to help them secure their victories, including Roy Hibbert breakout game against the Washington bigs and Serge Ibaka's matchup with Blake Griffin.

May 7, 2014: Searching For Answers
The two remaining Conference Semifinal series tipped off on Tuesday with Miami and San Antonio both cruising to wins by 21 and 24 points, respectively. The Nets tried five different defenders on LeBron James, but could not slow him down. Meanwhile, the Blazers had no answer for Tony Parker's game-high 33 points or the Spurs bench, which outscored the Blazers, 50-18 in Game 1.

May 6, 2014: First Strike
The Conference Semifinals opened on Monday night with the Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers picking up Game 1 wins on the road in Indiana and Oklahoma City, respectively. Using SportVU data, we take a look at the matchups they were able to win in order to steal home-court advantage.
